From Within by Yao Mensah
FROM WITHIN narrates the experiences of Mawuko Dzafor, a hard-working Togolese man who lives in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He is shocked to learn that his nephew, Kouma, has connived with others and illicitly sold his property in Togo by using fake documents. Why is Mawuko being swindled by his nephew?
Instead of attending classes at the university, with Mawuko’s financial support, Kouma lives the ‘high life’ and mingles with dubious company.
In his attempt to reverse this fraudulent transaction, Mawuko discovers a hotbed of corruption in Togolese society. He encounters the thwarting propensity of an arbitrary and unfair judiciary institution, a system for the rich and powerful!
The author contrasts subsistence living in Togo of the majority with its huge disparities in income and lifestyle of a few. He also questions the wisdom of the traditional African view that having many children leads to a better future.
